Lakeside Living: A Harmonious Blend of Nature and Japanese Sophistication

A Summerhouse in Bavaria, Germany

The dream of the owners was to build a house onto the narrow lake site which has a close connection to nature combined with a Japanese atmosphere. The aim of the architect, Stephan Maria Lang, was to design a Gesamtkunstwerk where the Architecture is to express a strong relationship to nature in which the house is part of the natural environment.

A Summerhouse with a garage, a boathouse, and a sauna perfectly integrated into the lakeshore - this is the essence of Lakeside Living. Designed by Stephan Maria Lang, this architectural marvel is a testament to the beauty of nature and the sophistication of Japanese design. The concept of Gesamtkunstwerk, where the architecture, garden, and interior spaces are in perfect harmony, is brought to life in this unique lakeside retreat.

What sets Lakeside Living apart from other designs is its seamless integration with the natural environment. The building is composed of a concrete body and a crafted wooden shell, with a light axis running through it, ending in a pier at the lake. The site itself was re-naturalized with grasses, creating a serene and picturesque landscape. Wooden walkways lead to a boathouse and a generous terrace overlooking the lake, providing the perfect spot for relaxation and contemplation.

One of the key features of Lakeside Living is its low maintenance design, making it an ideal hideaway for an older couple. The use of natural materials and the careful attention to detail ensure that the house blends effortlessly with its surroundings, creating a sense of tranquility and serenity. The architecture allows for the entry of lucent shadows from the existing trees, further enhancing the connection between the interior and the exterior spaces.

Constructed between 2011 and 2013, Lakeside Living is located on the shores of Lake Starnberg in Bavaria, Germany. The design team, which included Steffi Senula and Jennifer Charles, worked tirelessly to overcome challenges such as the difficult lake clay for the construction of the boathouse and the foundation of the main house. Their dedication and creativity resulted in a truly remarkable architectural masterpiece.

Lakeside Living has received numerous accolades, including the prestigious Bronze A' Design Award in 2018. This award recognizes the outstanding and creatively ingenious design that authentically captures the essence of nature and Japanese sophistication. The design of Lakeside Living incorporates best practices in art, science, design, and technology, contributing to quality of life improvements and making the world a better place.

Stephan Maria Lang's Lakeside Living is a testament to the power of design to create a harmonious blend of nature and human ingenuity. With its unique features and stunning aesthetics, this lakeside retreat is a true work of art that will continue to inspire and captivate for years to come.
